Charlotte Elizabeth Deming was the daughter of New York City banker Frederick Deming (the son of Litchfield merchant Julius Deming) and Mary Gleason. This portrait was painted two years after her premature death at age 24. Having portaits painted posthumously was not unusual at the time. An accompanying portrait shows her sister, Lousia, dressed in black -- possibly as a sign of mourning.
