INTRODUCTION
This Guide to
Local Historical and Genealogical Resources in Northwestern
Connecticut is designed as a research aide for persons interested
in the history of the towns in Northwestern Connecticut the
lives of the region's past inhabitants. Because the Northwest
Corner of the state has no central institution that collects
resource material for the area, local churches and synagogues,
historical societies, libraries, museums, schools and town
halls serve as important sources for researchers. The towns
within the guide are listed alphabetically. All of the institutions
within each town will appear under one of the following categories
of resources:

TIPS
FOR CONTACTING RESEARCH FACILITIES
When writing
for information:
- Include a self-addressed
stamped envelope
- Be patient;
there are probably many other requests such as yours and
so it may take several weeks to receive your answer
- Ask specific
questions, include information (names, dates, etc.) that
you already know so the person doing research for you has
information to build on include your previous sources so
that information will not be duplicated
- Know that there
may be research fees
- Know that there
will be photocopying fees (note that not everything can
be photocopied, especially large or fragile items).
When calling
for information:
- Be prepared
to follow up with written questions. Staff members may not
be able to conduct a search of the resources at the moment
you call.
When visiting
the site for information:
- Call ahead
to make an appointment and confirm the hours. Most of the
materials are non-circulating and will probably require
supervision for use. Many local historical and genealogical
resources are fragile and the greatest care must be taken
to use them.
- Know that places
do not always have the information that you are searching
for or the sources that you need to continue your search.
- Be aware of
the rules and regulations for use of materials at the institutions
you visit.

The First Church of Bethlehem, established in 1738, has also
been known as the First Congregational Church and the Bethlehem
Federated Church.

the collection includes information concerning two early ministers,
the Rev. Joseph Bellamy and the Rev. Azel Backus. 250 Years
of the First Church of Bethlehem is also available. Early

include a genealogy of the Catlin family, cemetery headstone
inscriptions dating from the 1700's through 1937 as well as
both Chipman's and Bentley's histories of Harwinton.

Third Society of Litchfield. It became the Milton Ecclesiastical
Society in 1795, the Milton Congregational Presbyterian Church

Church. It has been known as the United Methodist Church since
the 1940's. The BantamUnited Methodist Church existed from
1898 to 1989.

local histories, maps, photographs and newspapers. A special
strength of the collection includes the only recorded history
of Roxbury from 1731 to 1796. Only records after 1950 are
located at the church. The original records are housed at
the CT State Library in Hartford and a photocopy is located
at the Minor Memorial Library in Roxbury.
Records and copies are available at the CT State Library
and Minor Memorial Library. Recent church records are available
by appointment only. **The church will not perform genealogical
research.
